In 1984 as an added attraction to Riverbend Crocodile Farm Corky Kelly constructed a small thatch structure which was to house paintings supplied by artists from all over South Africa.

Riverbend Art Gallery was opened by the late Dennis Cominos the then mayor of Margate on the 17th  August 1984. For the next 21 years Riverbend Art Gallery was home to works by many of South Africa’s finest artists including, Dino Paravano, Titta Fasciotti, Rob Wareing, Rob McIntosh, John Smith, Kobus Kotze, Peter Hall, Louis Audie, Richard Rennie, Coral Spenser, Isabel Le Roux, Mark Poisson, Tony De Freitas and many others.

Rob Wareing the renowned pastel portrait artists was the resident artist in the Riverbend Art Gallery for a number of years before leaving to ply his trade in the UK. Rob is however still a regular supplier of work for the new gallery and often uses Riverbend as a venue for undertaking commissioned portraits when he returns to South Africa in summer. Besides original works this small gallery also sold prints, cards and a limited amount of pottery.
